Previous conferences

Need to know has been held annually since 2011, except 2020. Here you can see the program from all the conferences and read the published papers from 2018 and 2019.

About the conferences

Need to Know is an annual conference on intelligence history. Organizing Committee includes Thomas Wegener Friis from Southern Denmark University (SDU), Wladyslaw Bulhak and Przemyslaw Gasztold from IPN, Michael Goodman from King's College London, Karl Lorentz Kleve from Norwegian National Aviation Museum (NL), Sylwia Szyc from IPN, and Anna Piekarska from Museum of Polish History.

The first conference took place in Brussels in 2011, organized by IPN and SDU alongside the Polish and Danish European Union presidencies. The conference focused on intelligence and intelligence operations, using declassified archival material that had recently become available to scholars in former communist countries. Its main goal was to bring together scholars from Eastern and Central Europe who regularly analyzed such material, along with researchers from Western Europe and North America, in order to create a European Platform for Intelligence Studies. The conference was successful, and the decision was made to try and organize it annually with different local hosts.

The conference has grown steadily since 2011, attracting intelligence researchers from Europe, North America, and the Middle East. It has been held at various locations including Odense, Visby, Leuven, Greifswald, Karlskrona, Budapest, Bodø, Tallinn, London, and Langelands Fort. The 2020 conference was postponed due to Covid.

PUBLICATION OF PAPERS

It has always been the intent to publish the best papers based on conference presentations. In 2019 we were fortunate to be offered a companionship with the International Journal of Intelligence, Security and Public Affairs (IJISPA) for a biennial special edition with the best papers from the previous two conferences. The first volume was published in December 2020 with the best papers based on presentations from the conferences in Bodoe 2018 and Tallinn 2019.

From 2022, the editors has unfortunately decided to terminate IJISPA. But we have been fortunate to be offered an agreement with the International Journal of Intelligence and Counterinterintelligence instead (IJIC). A Special Edition is planned for 2023. With our new partnership from 2023 with IIHA, their Journal of Intelligence History will also be available for publication of papers.

The papers from 2018 and 2019 can be read here:

The International Journal of Intelligence, Security, and Public Affairs: Vol 22, No 3 (tandfonline.com)

There are plans to publish papers from conference I - VII also. They will be made available here when published.
